Once you have uploaded contacts to Brew, you can segment them to send highly relevant emails to targeted audiences. Creating focused segments increases engagement, improves deliverability, and enhances the overall effectiveness of your email marketing efforts.

Targeted sending

Dynamic updates

Creating an Audience

There are two approaches to creating an audience in Brew: with AI assistance or manually.

1

Define your audience

In the AI audience creator prompt box on the Audience page:

  1. Enter a natural language description of the audience you want to create
  2. Be as specific as possible about your targeting criteria

Examples:

“Customers who signed up in the last 30 days but haven’t opened any emails yet”

“Contacts who clicked on our product launch email and visited our pricing page”

“Enterprise customers who have been subscribers for more than 6 months”

  1. Click “Generate Audience” to let Brew create the audience for you
2

Review audience composition

Whether you used AI or manual filters, Brew will:

  1. Show you the filters that define your audience
  2. Display a preview of contacts that match your criteria
  3. Show the total number of matching contacts

You can adjust any AI-generated filters or add additional criteria at this stage.

3

Name and save your audience

  1. Enter a descriptive name for your audience
  2. Click “Save Audience”

Your saved audience will now be available for selection when creating emails and automations.

Using Saved Audiences

Any saved audience will show up in:

  1. Audience page dropdown - Click on the chip that shows the selected audience to view all saved audiences
  2. Create page - When creating emails or automations
  3. Remix page - When remixing existing content

For a selected audience, you can:

  • Download as CSV - Export the audience to a CSV file
  • Add to subscription groups - Add all contacts in the audience to specific groups
  • Delete audience - Remove the audience definition (this does not delete the contacts)

Deleting an audience cannot be undone. All filters and configurations associated with this audience will be permanently removed.

Common Audience Examples

Here are some effective audience segments you might want to create:

Audiences vs. Subscription Groups

Brew offers two ways to target your communications: Audiences and Subscription Groups. Each serves a different purpose:

Audiences

Dynamic filters that automatically update as contact data changes. Ideal for targeting based on behavior, properties, or engagement.

Subscription Groups

Explicit memberships that contacts can opt into or out of. Ideal for content categories and giving contacts control over their preferences.

For the most effective email strategy, you can combine both approaches:

  1. Organize with Subscription Groups - Let contacts choose what types of content they want
  2. Target with Audiences - Within those categories, segment based on engagement and properties

For example, you might have a “Product Updates” subscription group, but then create an audience of “Highly engaged Product Update subscribers who clicked in the last 30 days” for a special announcement.

Audience Best Practices

Start with core segments

Create basic segments for engagement levels first (highly engaged, somewhat engaged, dormant)

Use descriptive names

Name audiences clearly so your team understands their purpose (e.g., “Active Enterprise Prospects Q2”)

Target smaller audiences

More targeted audiences often lead to higher engagement than broad sends

Test before scaling

Test messaging with a small audience segment before sending to larger groups
