Wix DNS Setup Guide
Step-by-step instructions for configuring DNS records in Wix
Setting Up DNS Records in Wix
This guide will walk you through the process of setting up DNS records for Brew with a Wix domain. Due to Wix’s limitations, special considerations are required.
For official documentation from Wix, please visit their Managing DNS Records page.
Important Limitation
Wix DNS does not support MX records for subdomains when your nameservers are pointed at Wix. This creates a significant limitation for email authentication setup.
Options for Wix Domain Owners
If you have a domain registered through Wix, you have two main options:
Option 1: Use External DNS
Set up your domain using the “Pointing” method, which lets you manage DNS records through an external provider.
Option 2: Use Root Domain
Use your root domain with Brew (not recommended as it may interfere with your website and doesn’t follow email best practices).
Option 1: Using External DNS (Recommended)
If you purchased your domain through Wix but want to use external DNS management:
Change your domain's nameservers
- Log in to your Wix account
- Go to Domains in your Dashboard
- Select your domain
- Click on “Name Servers”
- Select “Use another DNS service (point nameservers)”
- Enter the nameservers of your preferred DNS provider (e.g., Cloudflare, GoDaddy, etc.)
- Save your changes
Set up DNS records with your external provider
Once you’ve changed your nameservers, you’ll need to:
- Set up the necessary DNS records (A, CNAME) to point your domain to Wix for your website
- Follow the DNS guide for your specific provider to add Brew’s required records:
When changing nameservers, there may be a temporary disruption to your website and email services. Make these changes during low-traffic periods.
Option 2: Using Root Domain (Not Recommended)
If you must use Wix’s DNS:
Access Wix DNS settings
- Log in to your Wix account
- Go to Domains in your Dashboard
- Select your domain
- Click on “Advanced” tab
Add MX record for your root domain
- In the Advanced DNS settings, find the MX Records section
- Click “Add” or edit existing records
- For the Host field, use @ (representing your root domain)
- For the Value field, paste the MX value from your Brew dashboard
- Set Priority to 10
- Save your changes
Adding MX records to your root domain may interfere with any existing email setup you have. This is why we generally recommend using a subdomain for email marketing.
Add SPF and DKIM records
- In the Advanced DNS settings, find the TXT Records section
- Add the SPF and DKIM records as instructed in your Brew dashboard
- For SPF, use @ as the host
- For DKIM, use the exact hostname provided by Brew
Wix has limitations on the number and types of custom records you can add. You may encounter issues adding all the required records.
Recommended Alternative: Third-Party DNS Provider
Due to Wix’s limitations with MX records for subdomains, we strongly recommend using one of these alternatives:
Cloudflare
Free DNS management with excellent performance
GoDaddy
Commonly used registrar with full DNS management
Route 53
AWS’s reliable DNS service (paid)
